Emily Mathason has always been a dreamer. She was born in West Virginia and lived her childhood years in a small town in Pennsylvania, just 20 minutes over the WV border. She was a cheerleader, ran track, was in every high school play her school put on since the 7th grade. She is a cancer survivor. A child who has known many great grandparents and found herself catching up socially with way too many people in funeral homes. She went to Penn State, moved to Los Angeles, and actually stayed working in the business she loved and studied for so many years, acting and then moving to the other side of the camera as a Director and Assistant Director.
I have always struggled with how to show the world what's in my head. Comedic, dark, or otherwise. This past year I decided to throw it all down on paper and speak for many generations of women that have been taken advantage of and left suffering with the emotional leftovers from the actions of the paralleled generations of men drifting unscathed alongside them.
A year ago, I wrote a script.
It was for a short film that highlighted some of the thoughts that had been stewing in my mind about dating, confidence, communication, double-standards, sexuality, courage, ferocity, independence, aggression, mental illness, and empathy. It took me to a deep place of introspection and self-awareness that I worked hard to convey through my work. It tackled hard issues, dark memories, the suspension of reality, and hidden caverns of the human psyche.
I brought her to life. The film and the character. And I'm proud of them both. I hope they reach you. I hope they teach you. I hope they give you strength and resolve. I hope they help us all to heal. Through the anger and the pain we will rise anew.
