Experiencing Interruptions?

The Grandfather

The film shows a slice of reality, in which my grandfather tells me various events, especially from the past. I do not interfere with these relations. I don't ask questions. I record my grandfather in natural situations, i.e. when he tells me about something, and he does it very often, because he wants to pass these stories to me. In some scenes of the film, he didn't even know he was being recorded. I watched him, and the result is this documentary.

Director Biography - Michał Anioł Tuczapski

I grew up on 3 different continents, and lived in 5 different countries. When I was 11 years old, my family and I went to Thailand, where I attended an English-language school for the first time, it was a very interesting experience, but also very demanding. After living in Thailand for a year, we moved to the Dominican Republic, where for the first two years I attended a French-language school. However, the task was even harder because I had to learn two languages at once from the beginning, Spanish, which is the language spoken in the Dominican Republic, and French, which is the language used at school. It was also during this period that I began to develop my passion for filmmaking, starting to make my first films, experimental, documentary and fiction. When I was 15 we moved to Colombia, where I had an online school, the same one I had attended the year before in the Dominican Republic. At that time, too, I applied to the best schools in the United States, and got into The Lawrenceville School, one of the most elite high schools in the United States, where I am starting to go after this summer.

Director Statement

Filmmaking is my passion, that's why in future I want to be a film director, besides the fact that filmmaking gives me great pleasure and joy, I feel that I have a lot of interesting and valuable stories to tell to the world, which among other things come from the fact that I lived on three different continents, and I got to know different perspectives of life in different parts of the world, different structures and different human behaviours. For as long as I can remember, I've always been drawn to good movies, and at the age of 8 I enjoyed watching such films as "Leon the Professional", "La Femme Nikita", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Big Blue", "Lost in Translation", "Forest Gump", "Falling Down", "Cast Away", "Catch Me If You Can", "The Terminal", and Woody Allen's early works, "Small Time Crooks", "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion". The first time I started to be deeply interested in movies was when I started to notice some technical mistakes in movies, like the different placement of props after changing the frames in "La Femme Nikita", or actors' movements not matching after changing the frames, and so on. Those were the first moments that made me interested in film production. It was then that I understood that films are not just about showing pretty frames, and explosive chase scenes, but about conveying emotions such as happiness, sadness, heartbreak, madness, fear. The next step in filmmaking that I started to be interested in was camera work, using different frames, making cuts, using closeup, medium full shot, or cowboy shot. Once I learned the basics of filmmaking, I started making short films with my brother that focused on what I'd already learned, which was framing, using different shots, at the right moment and so on. But after you make a movie, you have to edit it, so I also learned how to edit movies, I learned how to make cuts in the right places, I learned how to add the right effects, add soundtracks, and the right music.
