Director Statement

THE GIRL ON THE MOON represents my debut as a director in my own right (I have previously co-directed with my partner) and is a proof of concept for a television series I have in development.

It was one of 16 projects from hundreds of submissions selected by Epic Games to be made into a sub-5min film in just 6 weeks using their Unreal Engine (developed for games and new to the film and television industry).

It was a steep learning curve working under such stringent timing constraints with technology we had never used before. The film is live action shot in a 7.5m x 7.5m studio with a physical set in front of a volumetric LED screen displaying virtual environments created by emerging digital artists.

It was a challenge to write a screenplay that establishes the theme; explores the characters, their relationships, goals and obstacles; and leaves the audience wanting more in just 5min.

THE GIRL ON THE MOON explores themes of disconnection and isolation. The COVID pandemic has taught us just how much we have taken for granted. We have never had our freedom so restricted. It has taken this extreme level of enforced isolation to realise what actually sustains humanity is connection to each other and communion with nature.

THE GIRL ON THE MOON takes these themes to the extreme, with Luna cut-off not only from her family and her culture, but from humanity and the Earth itself.
