If the script for “The Girl on the Beach” has anything, it is dialogue. Many, abundant dialogues, as required by a fast-paced comedy that is respected. Going through so much spoken exuberance, I couldn't help but evoke the classic “His Girl Friday” by Howard Hawks.
In his film, Hawks set out to break the dialogue speed record, which until then was held by “The Front Page,” the film adaptation of the same work that serves as the basis for “His Girl Friday.”
As in Hawks' film, we want the dialogue in “The Girl on the Beach” to be fired at the speed of a machine gun. We want the characters to interrupt each other, make mistakes, ramble, repeat themselves, and overlap. But not only the agility of the dialogues will set the pace of the story. A staging as dizzying as the dialogues will reinforce the speed of the film.
But humor does not only live on speed. We want the camera placement, editing, photography, and art direction to support the comic effect, as in a Jacques Tati film. That humor depends not only on what is said, or how it is said. Not only about what happens but also about unusual and funny camera shots, about art elements that accompany the comedy.
We want a romantic comedy that goes from “Annie Hall” to “M. Hulot's Holiday,” with some of the craziness of “A Night at the Opera.” But don't lose sight of the romance.
