The GORILAS republic
Do you remember the day you transitioned to Gorila?
This screendance piece knits an experience inspired in suspense movies crossed by absurd situations. We play with the artifies and mutation of subjectivity, we follow a transformation that irrupts in an intimate space, across the way to a public space. This archive of a pre pandemic world investigates in handcraft ways and simple resources: a cellphone, a mask, and dance.
The characterization of a human body with an animal face, Gorillas’ face, proposes an oniric aesthetic to these bodies that get in touch in an almost scary approach first and mutually sharing, kneading, observing each other, in the transmission of rhythmic and sensible dances.
At the same time, is an alliance with the transfeminist conceptual lines in which diverse authors revindicate this animal image as a re appropriation of insults and resistance to the oppressive established order: Guerrilla Girls, Donna Haraway, Virgine Despentes, Paul B Preciado, are just some of this investigators who linked with this animal figure to develop their political/artistic postures.
As a fact, the three people that appear in this piece with the mask, unlink in diverse ways to the cisheteronorm.
This collaboration took place in the neighbourhood La Roma in Mexico City in 2020, between French, Uruguayan, Argentine and Cuban artists.
