Douglas DeVore has traditionally worked in television, earning regional Emmys for his work on NBC and PBS. He has directed 67 episodes of the PBS children's series, "Mark Kistler's Imagination Station." and one mediocre Jack in the Box commercial. This is is first short film.
As a teenager, my ignorance and misguided understanding of romance was impressive. I instantly identified with the Jonathan Coulton song, "The Future Soon," in its humorous description of a boy's unrequited love and his envisioned shaping of a future to impress the girl. And while I didn't alter myself into a cyborg or build a giant robot army that grows out of control, there's just something so wonderful, cringy, and relatable in the protagonist's misguided attempts to win over love. I felt a strong passion to turn the song's story into a short film.
I leaned strongly into visual effects and digital sets that play a large part in creating the playful vibrant style, futuristic tone, and even comedic atmosphere of the story's world. Each set and effect is loveably hand crafted for your sole enjoyment. Yes, just yours.
I hope this short film strikes a chord with so many others who remember their own terrible ideas of romance in those awkward years, and realize that it could have been so much worse.
