The Fire Within

Viktor and Damir are best friends. Viktor is depressed and suicidal, lost in his thoughts of the
past. He lives in a country house somewhere in Zagorje, isolated from others. He spends his days
looking into the fireplace, writing in his journal. Damir is a thoughtful and happy man who visits
Viktor as much as possible. On this specific visit, Viktor had enough of Damir’s constant
nagging, who constantly wants to talk to Viktor about their past. Even so, Damir stays passive
and continues to keep Viktor company, looking for a way to make him talk. After some time,
both sit at the table and begin to eat. Although they had a good time throughout the day, Damir
decides to try and start the topic of their past again. Viktor doesn’t even acknowledge it, so both
continue drinking. Damir starts provoking Viktor who had enough of Damir’s questioning, so he
goes to the bathroom to refresh himself. Afterward, he sees Damir smoking inside the house,
which starts a heated argument, although this time Viktor took matters into his own hands – he
begins to physically abuse Damir, who stops him with a knife stab. Day after, both meet up in
front of the terrace and finally touch upon their history, even if it was for a moment. Viktor
returns into the house, where he sat in front of the fireplace. He takes his journal out, his focus on
the folded paper inside the journal. He opens it, reading the content of it – the paper was
seemingly a cry for help. Furthermore, he throws the paper into the fireplace. Damir comes into
the house, looking for Viktor, who smiled to Damir’s concern. Together they return to the terrace
to continue their talk over a couple of beers.
