Experiencing Interruptions?

The Fire This Time: For the Love of Art

A film-documentary written, directed and produced by award-winning film-maker Alan Springer, filmed on location in Barbados, Anguilla, St Maarten and London. The film takes a look at the arts of Caribbean creatives in those locations and proposes a way forward via digitization post-COVID, concluding that "black" artists must be better organized business-wise, view their creative work as product, and utilize digital processes more in bringing their work to a wider international market and compete more equally in the mainstream.

Director Biography - Alan Springer

Alan Springer was born in Barbados, grew-up in London and now lives between Barbados and the UK.

Alan has a lifelong track record working in the creative space in London and the Caribbean, working as musician, stage writer and director, filmmaker, author and both as a teacher and lecturer.

As a musician straight from school, he toured with many popular bands in and around London and the UK, also working across Europe and on the African continent.

Later returned to study for a Combined Arts degree at Middlesex University and founded the group Images Theatre Company. Won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Fringe as an actor in the acclaimed award-winning play Pulse. Wrote, directed and produced numerous successful productions for the London stage and Provincial touring. Theatre credits also include the acclaimed reggae musical “Rainbow Uprising” produced by Sadlers Wells Theatre Trust and with three successful seasons in London at Lillian Baylis Theatre, Shaw Theatre and the Astoria.

Alan has written several radio broadcast commissions for BBC Radio Drama, including the drama adaptation of the popular children’s novel Comfort Herself by Geraldine Kaye and a literary abridgement of the same novel. He has authored published novels and picture-books on the theme of internet safety, used in schools in the UK and available in many schools and public libraries and in Barbados and Montserrat in the Caribbean.

Alan is founder/director of two production companies, Uprise22 in London and Fronthouse Productions in Barbados.

With Fronthouse, he directed and produced the International Festival multi-award-winning film-documentary “The Fire This Time: ArtBarbados”, showcasing the arts of Barbados. This was followed by a second award-winning documentary, “The Fire This Time: For the Love of Art”, filmed in Barbados, Anguilla, St Maarten and London, which explores the arts of black Caribbean creatives working in the Caribbean and in London. Alan also wrote and directed the short-film series “COVID-diaries”, for the National Cultural Foundation Barbados, telling the stories of twelve Barbadian people from different walks of life during the recent Coronavirus pandemic.

In London, Uprise22 has been working on music video production and currently has the full-length feature film “Uprise” in development, to be filmed in Barbados, London and Ghana, for which we are seeking funds to go into production. A cross between Black Panther and Black Lighting, it is an ambitious Afrofuturism film project for which Alan has written the screenplay.

In addition to his work in the arts, Alan is a qualified martial arts instructor and qualified experienced FA football coach. He has also dabbled in politics, ran in the 2018 General Elections in Barbados and spent two years as shadow Minister of Culture.
