The Female General`s Moustache

A Jin Opera troupe, which has been passed down for several generations, is struggling to survive. They finally get a job, but it is disrupted by a street dance troupe. However, their apprentice, who is about to take over the opera troupe, has a sudden idea to add some trendy elements from street dance troupe to seek development.
The ancient stage seems to have a magical power and senses his desire, and one after another, they bring Mu Guiying from movies, games, and anime onto the stage to perform《 Lady General Mu Takes Command》, which also makes him grow a beard as a female role performer.
The beard scares the apprentice a little, but he doesn't understand the meaning behind it and is obsessed with recruiting three young Mu Guiyings to contribute to Jin Opera, only to be backlashed.
After the apprentice failed to bribe, he decides to attack the three Mu Guiying, but he is finally defeated due to his lack of ability.The young Mu Guiyings advise him to surrender, and he finally realizes that his actions will only accelerate the demise of Jin Opera, so it is better to let nature take its course.

Zhang Disheng was born on October 26, 1986. He graduated from the Journalism Department of the China Institute of Defence Science and Technology in 2009.
In 2014, he was the screenwriter and assistant director of the feature film 《Rebirth of the Earth》
In 2015, he was the screenwriter and assistant director of the feature film 《It's You》.
In 2016, he directed the documentary 《Find the trace of Cheng Hai》 and won the Best Public Welfare Film Award at the 6th Beijing International Internet Film Festival.
From 2017 to 2020, he worked as the executive director of the program 《The Plain China》at China Central Television.
In 2021, he was the screenwriter and director of the short films 《Ha Huo》《Reflection》《Midnight Cabinet Sound》《Temptation》 and 《Goodbye, Mom》.

Director Statement

我在电视台供职期间,接触过很多非遗传承人,有老有少。年长者对衣钵心存敬畏,恪守传统;后进者多不愿在快速增长的经济环境中滞后,求变求新,其本意是要在潮流中弘扬传统,可结果往往使传统面目全非,非但没有弘扬,反而加速消亡。
追本溯源,大多非遗是昔日潮流,但在历史进程中被边缘化,是社会意识在时代中的选择,是事物发展的必然规律,是为天道,若通过人力强行将新生事物嫁接其上,催生出一些既不被传统认可,又不被时尚青睐的异类国潮,无疑是对非遗偃苗助长,有违天道。
可见,非遗的创新应当慎之又慎,不僧不俗的形式只会让其晚节不保,不如顺其自然,体面谢幕。
基于此,我们首先为影片确立了略显荒诞的风格。
空间锁定在老戏台,这是传统戏剧的主要阵地。面对空间的局限,我们要避免影片呈现出小品感,需考虑镜头与舞台的位置关系,于是将其设定为大众与戏曲之间的关系。随着三个新式穆桂英对舞台的入侵,景别渐次放大,象征着大众逐渐远离戏曲的过程。
古时戏曲承担教化民众的功能,多以优良传统为精神内核。如今,诸多潮流文化将这些精神内核借鉴并发扬,就此看来,戏曲的生命得到了延续。这也是我们在人物设定中,让四个不同形式穆桂英同台的含义。
During my tenure at the TV station, I have come into contact with many inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, young and old. The elderly ones hold the tradition in awe and strictly adhere to it, while the younger ones are more inclined to seek change and innovation in the rapidly growing economy. But the result is often to make the tradition completely different. Instead of carrying it forward, it accelerates its demise.
Their original intention is to promote tradition in the tracing back to the origin, most intangible cultural heritage was once a trend in the past, but marginalized in the historical process, which is the choice of social consciousness in the era, a necessary law of things development and conforming to the will of Heaven. If the new things are forcibly grafted onto it, it will produce some abnormal national trends that are neither recognized by tradition nor favored by fashion, undoubtedly promoting the decline of intangible cultural heritage, which goes against the natural order.
Therefore, innovation of intangible cultural heritage should be carefully considered, and forms that are neither too monastic nor too secular should be avoided, which will only lead to its downfall. It is better to let it go with dignity.
Based on this, we first established a slightly absurd style for the film.
The space is locked in the old theater, which is the main battlefield of traditional drama. Facing the limitations of space, we need to avoid the feeling of skits in the film. We need to consider the relationship between the camera and the stage, so we set it as the relationship between the public and opera. As the three new-style Mu Guiyings invade the stage, the scene gradually enlarges, symbolizing the process of the public gradually moving away from opera.
In ancient times, drama played the role of educating the people and had the excellent tradition as its spiritual core. Nowadays, many trendy cultures draw lessons from and carry forward these spiritual cores, and thus drama's life is extended. This is also the meaning of having four different forms of Mu Guiyings on the stage in our character setting.
