The False Eye

Vincent, a 10 year old boy steals a GoPro Camera kept for surveillance in a local provision store aspiring to make a cinema. Along with his friends Rosy & Kishore, Vincent begins shooting. But soon Rosy gets into an argument with the boys as they mock her looks. She leaves the shoot midway leaving Vincent’s plans astray. A sense of guilt takes over Vincent and he decides to return or abandon the camera. Their attempts to abandon the Camera fails and ends up getting caught by some men in his neighbourhood. As the camera’s control changes hands, it becomes an instrument for privacy intrusion and begins to instigate violence. The boys get caught on the wrong side of these actions and ends up in an irrecoverable loss. This film is entirely shot on a GoPro and the story is narrated entirely from the perspective of the Camera.

Director Statement

In a state like Kerala which boasts of high literacy rates, cases of moral policing is on the rise due to the regressive and rigid moral codes which are packaged as cultural and religious norms. A woman’s privacy is today a soft target with the constantly rising voyeuristic nature of the society. It is constantly held hostage and is used as a tool to threaten and blackmail them to conformity. They are often judged by a false gaze manufactured by the various mainstream institutions including cinema. “Kalla Nottam” explores how a woman’s trust is abused and her integrity questioned by the constant false gaze she encounters at various stages of her life. With the film’s treatment, we strive to put the audience on the shoes of the character in a specific situation to deliver a more direct and immersive narrative.
