Born in Jammu and Kashmir, a beautiful valley in India, surrounded by the mighty Himalayas, the very first part of Shoaib's childhood was characterized by a love for his surroundings and an ever-increasing preference for visuals over words. His journey as a filmmaker began in high school as part of the school film club where he had the opportunity to make documentaries, newsreels and music videos. Shoaib is in his third year of the BFA Filmmaking program at the New York Film Academy. His style of filmmaking has evolved ever since, with his avant- garde short films exploring subjects like dreams and the unconscious. With the film 'The Enchanted Phiran', he has now also stepped into narrative films. He works in digital format.
My home, Jammu and Kashmir, has been known for its rich culture and natural beauty. Yet the territorial/political conflict that has been present for decades has affected the lives of countless civilians. I have always wondered what it is that keeps up the spirit of the people of Kashmir. The more I think about it, the closer I get to the conclusion that it is our cultural identity passed on from our predecessors that holds us together. Just before developing ‘The Enchanted Phiran’ into a film, I heard people and politicians debate about banning Phiran and associating it with acts of violence. The fact that people also have to justify and fight for their cultural identity within their motherland saddens me and I completely relate it to the conflict that Latifa has to go through to protect the phiran from her ruthless father and greedy grandmother.
The purpose of the film is to portray the beauty in one's beliefs and cultural identity while also highlighting the threat that flies like a vulture over a town. The film is a voice for culture.
