Director Biography - Cedric O'Bannon

Cedric O’Bannon is a documentary filmmaker and journalist whose work is grounded in truth-telling and resistance. A member of the National Writers Union / International Federation of Journalists, O’Bannon advances humanitarian goals by clarifying the past to build a more just future.
Born in Mississippi and raised near the foothills of the Sierra Mountain Range, just ninety miles from Sacramento, California, O’Bannon grew up in an academically engaged household—his father a university professor and department chair, his mother a primary school educator.
His passion for moving images began in junior high with a Super 8 film class. “It gave me a way to communicate more expressively,” he recalls—an early sense of empowerment that echoed later in life when he first read the Black Panther Party’s 10-Point Program during his senior year of high school.
O’Bannon’s formal training in film and video unfolded between 1991 and 2000, but his journalistic vision sharpened in 2012, the year Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was fatally shot in Florida. In the years that followed, O’Bannon documented the rise of movements confronting systemic injustice: Black Lives Matter, anti-fascist resistance, protests against police brutality, and eventually, the surge of white supremacist groups during the Trump era.
In June 2016, while filming a far-right rally in Sacramento, O’Bannon was stabbed by a neo-Nazi wielding a spear affixed to an American flagpole. The attack didn’t silence him—it forged his path forward. Long before the January 6th siege on the U.S. Capitol, Cedric O’Bannon was already documenting the frontlines of a brewing national crisis.
Today, based in Oakland, California, he continues to capture the images, voices, and stories that challenge the dominant narrative and uplift the struggles that too often go unseen.
