The Duke of Barranquilla
Coming from humble beginnings in Colombia's Caribbean coast, Carlos Castillo Monterrosa was renowned as one of Colombia’s preeminent journalists. He interviewed many writers, artists, musicians, athletes, and politicians of his time. In addition, he devoted parts of his career as a sportswriter, sportscaster, radio host, music promoter, and entertainment consultant, among a myriad of other roles. A sought-after tastemaker, he fostered the careers of many notable singers and composers in the Latin music scene during the 1960s and 70s. At his peak, he would come to be known by many of his colleagues and celebrities alike as “El Duque” – “The Duke.”
But on June 30th, 1979, Carlos Castillo’s life was cut short at the hands of a hired killer, taken from his family at the age of 33. He left behind his grieving family, whose existence was marked by Carlos’ eventful life, his outgoing personality, and his numerous accomplishments. In this moment, they were marred with anguish and uncertainty as to who would wish to see their patriarch killed. On the day of his funeral, the bustling city of Barranquilla came to a screeching halt; its streets were shut down as a procession of fellow journalists and community members paid tribute to him. His murder reverberated across the nation as the first confirmed assassination of a Colombian journalist by organized crime.
Yet Carlos’ tragic death is not the end of his story. As his family forged ahead with their studies, their careers, and their personal lives, stories about his larger-than-life personality and his camaraderie with people from every walk of life remain vibrant decades on. Over 40 years later, we reexamine Carlos’ life and death to make sense of his illustrious legacy. What explained his importance to the people of Barranquilla? Why did so many in his community confide in him? And most of all - who would want to see him dead?
