The Drive to Sing

When choir singing became dangerous, even deadly, in the era of COVID-19, some musicians turned to "car choirs" in parking lots to keep their music alive. See how it began, spread and gained international attention. Feel how it touched singers and audiences during this time of fear and isolation.

Director Biography - Bryce B. Denney

Bryce is a microchip verification engineer, pianist, woodworker--and now a film director based in Massachusetts. The restrictions of the pandemic unexpectedly gave him an opportunity to learn new audio/video skills, to meet new people, and to contribute to the arts. The Driveway Choir project and "The Drive to Sing" documentary are an exciting intersection of music, science, problem solving, and connecting with people.

Director Statement

We never intended to make a film. We just wanted to make music with our friends during the pandemic, and one thing led to another.

My wife Kathryn and I learned how to organize "car choirs" in May 2020, and we helped develop and spread this strange idea to music-starved singers across the US and Canada. Despite being the spotlight of several news stories and features across the country (including The Today Show), nobody was telling the larger story of what we were seeing and feeling as part of this movement. So we bought a 4K camera and started interviewing singers and choir leaders and requesting footage from our new friends online. Seven months later, with a lot of learning and a tremendous amount of help, we've made our first film, this feature-length documentary. We're excited to share it with music lovers everywhere!
