“The Decisioneer” is the culmination of my re-interest in film, not only with grappling with black-and-white art house cinema on cold winter nights, but also with shooting 35mm stills and learning to embrace the surprises that can result from the physical medium.
This project is much less precise than my previous short. We shot four rolls of 16mm film over the course of a year on a faulty, 1960s camera. The results are often out of focus and sometimes underexposed, but we got what we got. The imperfect, fuzzy lines and ragged edges leave room to dream, appropriate enough because all of the post-production was done between the hours of midnight and 4am, while my family slept upstairs.
