Director Statement

At a time when the climate crisis is happening in the world and is getting worse today, humans are actually showing their arrogance by increasingly damaging the environment and its biodiversity through massive industrialization development. Development is carried out by taking people's land and eliminating forests causing endless deforestation. In Indonesia, deforestation and land grabbing have been normalized in the name of massive development.

Land grabbing also occurred in Yogyakarta. Srimulyo Village as the largest village in Bantul was appointed as a Piyungan Industrial Estat by the Sultan of Yogyakarta in 2000. The impact has been prolonged to this day, the damage to waterways has resulted in Srimulyo Village being frequently flooded. The land is getting eroded day by day for industrial areas and people are more vulnerable to being evicted. Another village land that was seized was Sinduadi Village. There stood Jogja City Mall and Sindu Kusuma Park. The Yogyakarta Palace family also opened a Jogja Bay tourism business in Maguwoharjo Village, one of the largest waterparks in Southeast Asia.

The environmental permit of each building contains many irregularities. All of these policies were determined by the Governor of Yogyakarta without involving the village community. Currently, many village lands are requested Sultanate of Yogyakarta to recertification. This effort was made to accelerate the agro-tourism business which can accommodate tourism needs from the presence of the Yogya International Airport which has robbed the people of Kulon Progo's living space. Today's civilization is highly competitive, individualistic, with unequal rhythms of production and consumption, disproportionate profits because it is only for a few people.

Land grabbing as a community's living space tends to be facilitated by the State. Living spaces that contains diverse landscapes are not considered important. The state comes by pulverizing the landscape little by little. Landscapes clearly keep a history of all social and political fluctuations that occur in a location. The position of the landscape is only used as an objectification. The pace of modernity and tyranny allows all of these things to last for a long time. Landscape as a living space that provides a livelihood is not interpreted as anything other than as a background, or its beauty as an accessories. Positioning the landscape as the main subject will allow the landscape to speak for itself and not be constantly crushed by the authority of power.
