L’APPEL.

THE CALLING.
It is the water that brought us to our land.
Our old people to our land. It is the water that brought ‘them’ to our land, their new land.
It is the water that falls from our eyes at all that separates us today, from the way we were.
It is the water that continues to call us back to our old peoples thinking.

LIVES AND WORKS IN AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

Julia Mage'au Gray is a dancer, choreographer, skin marker (tattooist), photographer and film-maker who is interested in exploring her Papuan and Mekeo heritage within an urban Australian and New Zealand context. Her performances frequently combine dance with evocative video narratives. Now based in Auckland, Gray co-founded the performance group Sunameke in 1997. Dress or adornment, including the marking of the body with tatu (tattoo), is often of particular significance in her performances and films.

Director Statement

Auckland-based Fijian curator Ema Tavola invited me to devise a new work for the exhibition, 'A Maternal Lens' that was staged as part of the 4th International Biennial of Casablanca, Morocco from October 2018 to December 2018. I presented the act and practice of Melanesian marking as a live, performative contribution to the exhibition, alongside this short film that highlighted the contexts and movement of my skin marking practice from Papua New Guinea, to the diaspora, and to Casablanca. Sharing the culture, time and space that surrounds our marks, and that no matter the geography, the marks ground us and respond to a ‘calling’ to reconnect with our people and our land.
