Director Biography - Jayson Jaskeran

Jayson Jaskeran, also known as J. H. Jaskeran (born August 18th, 2001) is a Trinidadian filmmaker and writer inspired by a diverse amalgamate of genres and experiences—from Psychological Horror and Comedy to Queer stories. Their work often highlights intimate stories of the minority groups to which they belong.
In early 2020, Jaskeran began pre-production on their debut short film, Barray. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project had to be put on hold.

Later that year, Jaskeran would become a youth Juror for the 2020 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival and just a few months later, they would join the writing team of viral TikTok cartoon show, "The Experiences of Kairo and Crate."

In May 2021, they wrote and directed the third official Kairo and Crate clip while simultaneously organising the virtual play "Tong N' Country" as a student at the University of the West Indies.
Throughout the rest of the year, Jaskeran focused on their studies and later joined the Film Programme at the UWI and began pursuing a minor in Computer Science.

In April of 2022, Jaskeran completed a new short film, Breakout Room, which explores the themes of love and sexuality amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. The film was screened in June and July at NBTT's Nights of Visibility and the Pride Film Festival.

In September, Jaskeran moved to Canada to complete a semester-long exchange at Vancouver Island University, and there, they shot their second project, Drag In: KASH which follows a local drag performer as they show the world a day in their chaotic life. The film was released nine months later on July 21st, 2023.

Director Statement

Breakout Room is the fully realised product of all the filmmaking techniques that I have acquired during the eight years of my career. This short film is my take on the recent Screen-Life film format of the 2010s as it highlights the young queer experience in Trinidad and Tobago amidst a global pandemic.
