Born in Bahia, Brazil in 1957, Gezilda Lima has been living in Russia for the past 20 years. She is an economist, a journalist and a movie producer. She worked as a correspondent for Brazilian television in Russia from 2000 till 2014 as well as the editor-in-chief at Studio Ciryllica in 2017-2018.
The Box is her first short film as a director, in which she has conveyed her profound knowledge of human nature and her observations of life around us.
It is common in Russia to hear that people in Brazil live in cardboard boxes. This alludes to the slum dwellers. Of course, it is always very pleasant for me to dialogue with the Russians explaining the true meaning of "favela" in Brazil. And it always leaves me with a bitter sense of social inequality, arbitrariness and unfairness to the most humble people.
Hence, in my travels around the world, I have noticed that this is a problem not only for Brazilians but for all low-income people wherever they live.
It is still worse to feel that these same wronged people are not always able to identify the causes of this lack of social justice.
All of this, coupled with my experience among workers, inspired me to show this face of society lightly and cheerfully in my movie “The Box”.
