Director Statement

When we first moved into an apartment in Los Angeles, the absence of a laundry machine in our building seemed like a drawback. However, our perspective shifted when we entered the nearest laundromat, a one-star Yelp denominated "Thrifty Wash."

During an initial visit to Thrifty Wash, we encountered a striking woman – tall and slender, with an unnaturally vivid red hair bun. She wore a head-to-toe black leather ensemble, exuding an almost monastic aura. Her attire included black sunglasses typically used post-eye dilation, an odd choice considering the indoor, nocturnal setting. She appeared to be around 55 years old, her hands gloved in white rubber, and her skin strangely radiant, akin to Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey."

What truly fascinated us was her peculiar accessories: a colossal bleach bottle in one hand and a massive black umbrella unfurled indoors and out, held high above her head. As we drew near, she would mutter phrases reminiscent of a 1930s gangster movie, adding to her mystique. Our fascination grew, leading us to increase our laundry trips in the hope of encountering her – an intriguing figure we affectionately dubbed "The Bleacher."

About two months into our pursuit, it occurred to us that her past might be as captivating as her laundry eccentricities. Questions arose about the significance of the perpetual umbrella – a medical condition, a personal attachment, or perhaps something more enigmatic, like a vampire? This curiosity birthed the project we present today.

The tale of this extraordinary woman deserves a platform, and what better stage than animation? This is her narrative. This is The Bleacher.

Warmly,
Nicole & Adam
