The Birth

The Moulid, aka Al leila al kabeera “The Grand night” is an Egyptian style celebration of Prophet Mohammed’s (PBUH) birth. A spiritual, festive celebration which comes to life through dance, music, food, crowds and lights. During this spiritual dance, people whirl into a state of trance. Their bodies adopt rhythm and their souls amplify, taking over and filling the space with an aura of energy. In capturing this essence, I am reminded of an experience at the opera, Where the sonic energy resonating from an opera singer becomes grander and bigger than the physical human form it is being born from.
