Director Statement

The Birdcage is an extremely personal film of mine that I have been wanting to make ever since I came out of the closet. The unspoken struggle of being in the closet was one of the hardest experiences of my entire life. But being out of the closet has been one of the most liberating sensations I have ever felt. With my documentary, I wanted to capture this essence of the coming out narrative. Beginning with the realization, which can be one of the most unnerving steps in the process, up until the present point in time, where my protagonist Kai Lammers lives out and proud. However, being out of the closet is an ongoing struggle, a reality many gay men, including myself, come to realize after coming out. However, it is in the small victories when people, like Kai, find pride and self-love.
