The Becoming

The Becoming marks 30 years since the founding of award winning balletLORENT by choreographer Liv Lorent and celebrates the physical limits and self-discovery of performance.

The Becoming is about individuality, chaos, intimacy, and the strength we find in others. It delves into the process of creating a performance, presenting the story of what it takes to create performance from dancers, and how to make a work of art out of the union of bodies, music, costume, and light.

The film, directed by Game of Thrones actor and comedian, Ben Crompton, captures the first live performance of the production recorded at Newcastle’s Boiler Shop in January. Choreographed by Liv Lorent and performed by ten dancers aged from 23 to 59, the action reflects themes of discovery, rebirth, transformation, incorporating the iconography of dance through the part century and looks to stretch the limits of dance theatre. Featuring costumes by fashion designer Nasir Mazher and music from Dr Who composer, Murray Gold.

The action starts outside on the street, as a number of anonymously dressed figures seem almost compelled to reach the doorway of an unassumingly looking building. Once inside, they start to transition and are explosively reborn in a multitude of physical forms.
