The Beach of Dreams
Beach of Dreams is a poetic meditation on walking, the changing landscape and the effects of climate change. It follows the participatory journey of a small group of people to walk 500 miles over 35 days along the east coast of England. Capturing memories, loss and dreams of the people they met. Through the use of montage and sound, the film draws awareness to the relationships among the images of the long journey and the several voices of the participants and the malleability of their juxtaposition. The film is a poetic collection of asides and digressions that form a portrait of the embodied physicality and human effort of the long coastal path journey where multiple voices, geography and imagination meet.

My name is Fotis Begklis and I am a non-fiction filmmaker. I have developed a body of creative work, making short documentaries, experimental and non-fiction films. In my work, I am primarily interested in cinema’s ability to evoke thinking and memory and the power of film montage. My films explore the cracks and in-between spaces of non-fiction and experimental filmmaking as critical and creative media practices and the conditions for initiating change in social and political transnational context. I have worked with many artists, corporate brands, musicians and local communities and collaborated on innovative educational, historical and artistic projects. I have worked with various underrepresented groups and voices promoting social responsibility and ethical filmmaking through non-fiction film production practices.
Beach of Dreams was an epic journey to discover the hidden gems of the East Coast of England, inviting collaboration from communities and artists in Suffolk, Essex, Southend, and Thurrock.
In the summer of 2021 the artistic director of Kinetika, Ali Pretty, Guardian travel writer Kevin Rushby and radio producer John Offord, with the support of hundreds of volunteers walked 500 miles over 35 days along the east coast of England. They walked and dreamt together about how to take care of the environment, take care of the coast, take care of the community, take care of each other.
