The Ballad of Icarus 2000 B.A.B. uses fantasy to explore past and present truths about the music industry. For as long as there have been musicians there always been those who’ve inspired and influenced those musicians. In the 20th century, money and studios began to be a primary influence for musicians. This would often come into direct conflict with what attracted musicians to music in the first place.

This young man, Lokee, just wanted to realize his dream of being a performer. While he doesn’t make music for the fame or money, it seduces him. When he acts as an agent, performing tasks he doesn’t like, that is a manifestation of the compromise artist have to make in order the please the people who cut the checks.

Berry forms an antithesis, an opponent in the extreme. He believes money shouldn’t influence music the way it does, so he wants to destroy it. Berry’s methods are extreme. The consequences of trying to destroy the infrastructure are to ignore why it formed in the first place. In a way, he represents the rise of Limewire, Napster, and other similar disruptive forces at the turn of the century. Both sides have their arguments. This film doesn’t attempt to answer who is right and wrong, but if it can start a conversation while also being entertaining in its own right, we will be very pleased.
