Director Biography - Sam Oddie

Based in Manchester, Sam is an award winning Director/Producer of creative and often intimate documentaries. Sam’s films are powerful, personal, deeply insightful and hugely empathetic, with distinctly Northern warmth and wit. He’s a director whose eye for an arresting image is matched by his profound engagement with his subjects: these are films that can only be made with time and tenderness and trust. He creates work that illuminates communities whose stories are often untold or under-represented, in his work with LGBTQA+ people and with people who live with mental and physical health challenges. Telling these stories is vital not just to those communities, but to helping to build a more understanding, supportive and compassionate society for all of us.

Director Statement

I have been apart of Arts Emergency since 17. A journey that's lasted 6 years. From being a mentee to now joining their board and apart of the Youth Collective. It's been a delight to see the amazing work the charity has done, benefiting myself and hundreds of young people. It's integral that those young people who will be responsible for playing a part in the future of our culture, are allowed access into industries with a glass ceiling that keeps getting higher and higher.

The work Arts Emergency does is so important. I wanted to make a film that highlights the importance of supporting brilliant young artists, who are fearless in using their talents to achieve brilliance on a daily basis, showing the beauty of this community that has come together over 10 years. This is just a glimpse of that. It all starts with the belief, that the art world is our world.
