Experiencing Interruptions?

The Arm of a Delta, 2025, 2 min, 55 secs

Following a nautical journey that links the Guadalquivir River to the Pacific Ocean, I use the metaphor of the "cutting of an arm" to describe how the river’s course was modified, altering its relationship with the sea. This cut, symbolizing a violent transformation of the natural flow, connects with the gesture of the monument’s finger, pointing toward the land and the American continent, reflecting the historical violence of waterway alterations and their link to territorial control.
Through monumentality as a device of power, for both exploitation and oblivion, the piece addresses the geographic transformation of bodies of water as well as the grandiloquence of territorial power imposed during internal colonization in the Iberian Peninsula. The relationship between the Guadalquivir River and the route to the Pacific reveals how these waterways consolidated colonial power structures both within and beyond the Iberian frontier, connecting historical struggles over water and land control.
