Alexandros Nouskas Varelas graduated from National School of Dance and has studied Spanish Literature.
He has been experimenting with theater, video and filmmaking since adulthood. His field of interest can be better described under the term of Physical Cinema, in which movement can be applied in various ways.
His works have been screened in festivals around Europe and Greece such as Athens Video Dance Project, ScreenDance Festival in Stockholm, SzólóDuó festival - Ork_Kota_Platform in Budapest, the International Dance Film Festival in Brussels.
He has collaborated with Costas Gavras as an assistant choreographer on “Adults in the room” and as an assistant director on “Who will be eaten?” by directress Elpiniki Voutsa Retzepopoulou. He has been awarded a scholarship by Athens & Epidaurus Festival and has been honored as a fellow on ARTWORKS programme by Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
As a dancer he has worked with many companies and choreographers with performances all over Europe in theaters and venues.
My process in filmmaking is through a physical approach. Drawing from movement's tools, I attempt to redefine the use and the tools of cinematic creation. In the short "The 3 acts of melancholia" the camera becomes a character or embodies the viewer who interacts with the protagonists, observes them and almost comments on their situation.
