Director Statement

When creating The Follower, I wanted to explore the feeling of someone else being present in a space who is not actually there, which is a feeling that I believe many of us can relate to in our online interactions. Our protagonist, Alma, played brilliantly by Karoline Jørgensen, is at the forefront of the influencer-driven social media world we find ourselves in but is otherwise quite isolated, leading her to use a dating app. Through her character, I wanted to explore the consequences of oversharing and the amount of information that is readily available about us online.

One of the biggest influences on this film is the presence of a stalker who we never see, but whose eerie and unnerving presence can be felt throughout the story. This stalker embodies the dark side of our digitally connected world, preying on Alma's vulnerabilities and creating a sense of constant danger.

Karoline and I worked hard to craft a character that feels like a real person underneath her social media facade, a character who wouldn’t make stereotypical mistakes to drive the plot forward. This meant the antagonist had to challenge her in unexpected ways. The stalker's presence is felt in every scene, creating an atmosphere of dread and tension that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.

The Follower is a film that explores the dark and dangerous consequences of our online interactions. From myself and everyone involved in creating this - we hope you enjoy the film.
