Hailing from a small, industrial town in Northern India called Kanpur, Rahul grew up with his grandparents, until finally moving to Bombay to live with his mother when he turned eleven. He paid close attention to family relationships and developed a childlike curiosity to look at the world and some of his influences include Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, François Truffaut and Majid Majidi.
His first short Story of a Lonely Goldfish (2015) received nominations at several film festivals including Torrecinos Film Festival 2017 and Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2016.
Rahul decided to pursue MA Filmmaking at The London Film School to nourish his skills further and Une Paire de Jumelles is his graduation film.
The idea for The Binoculars came from the prominence of observation and detachment in our everyday lives. We see everything from a safe distance - but in close up. We scan articles and swipe through notifications without digging deeper - or taking a stand about anything.
Une Paire de Jumelles is Cadence's journey from privileged
detachment to engagement, when she encounters the world of the refugees, without her binoculars. The vivid colours and a slightly more lively atmosphere of Paris is contrasted with a dull, blue look of the countryside where the refugees reside.
I aim to ask an ambivalent question with the film about whether the two worlds of privilege and survival will come together. The film is about coming together of those from the first world and the third world.
