Director Statement

I had intentions to create something that would be experienced on a deeper level than just visual elements and basic film structure. Yehia, the filmmaker who has existential crisis after the failure of his first film, fails to find beauty and meaning in his outer world as his city is having major changes. "That's What Happened" is a portrayal of the relation between one self and the city, as it also discusses the modernization of my city, and how cruel and ugly-looking it became. The film is partially scripted, I believed that the city can't be forced to provide it's essence and soul, there has to be some improvisation and different experimenting techniques. The filmmaker-character is a symbol for each and every artist, in a military regime country that suppresses one's way of self expression. I, myself, had to take many shots of the film as fast as possible so I could avoid clashes in the streets. This film is about a lonely artist who is trying to have a connection with the city, and as he tries to invade more parts of the city where he has memories, as he slowly becomes a stranger.
