Director Statement

That Night is a short film which addresses the issue of home invasion and the subsequent response of the victim. It is set in the present day and centers on Vicky, a 20-year-old girl who lives alone in a huge log house, which is nestled deeply in the woods—isolated and secluded from society. Every day, Vicky travels a long distance through the woods in order to reach the train station, where she commutes by train to get to university, and return home. During a winter night, she is alone inside the house and she notices that a masked man is prowling around her house looking for a way in. Indeed, the man invades the house and, thus, Vicky confronts him. While Vicky fights for her survival, things spiral out of control. In these few terrifying seconds, Vicky turns into her own worst fear. She resorts to actions she never believed herself capable of committing. She manages to kill the intruder by hitting him frantically on the head. However, she does not stop there. Her anger is overwhelming. She does not seem to know what she is doing. She drags him to the basement of the house and there she suddenly rips the mask off his face. Although she realizes that he is dead, she slits his throat with a knife. There is blood dripping all over the place. Her glance froze. She looks at the man. Her expression changes and she begins to realize what she has done. She is thinking that she would never be capable of committing such a heinous deed. She gets out of the house at a slow pace and stands in the vast forest with the house in the background. She stares vacantly at the trees. In an abrupt movement, she slips her own throat and falls to the ground.

In the masked man’s effort to rape her, Vicky’s rage and adrenaline rush rendered her unconscious of her actions. She was just fighting for survival. At the end of the movie, she commits suicide for two reasons. She cannot fathom the fact that she killed a human being in such an abject manner and then, after killing him, she slit his throat without feeling uncomfortably at that moment. The second reason why she committed suicide is the contemplation of the consequences she will be facing since the film in set in Greece (Europe), where legislation protects the victimizer more than the victim acting in self-defense. Hence, instead of spending the rest of her life in prison, she prefers to end matters on her own terms.
