Tears of Extinction
The Asiatic cheetah is facing an extinction-level event. With fewer than 16 remaining in Iran, there is precious little chance to reverse the subspecies' rapid decline towards oblivion. In 2018 Iran’s leading cheetah conservationists were jailed and oppressed; accused of using cheetahs to spy on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. A year after their arrests, the Iranian regime panicked and sent government agents to South Africa in an attempt to learn how to shore up Iran’s dwindling cheetah population. But, they squandered a golden opportunity to preserve the Asiatic cheetah, an animal that has roamed Iran and graced the country’s environment, heritage, and culture for millennia.
Tears of Extinction examines what went wrong and what little hope remains to protect the Asiatic cheetah while traveling to South Africa to explore the work of conservationists who are successfully increasing the African cheetah population.
