Téarma Imolán
Téarma Iomlán is set in a possibly not-too-distant dystopian future in which the anti-abortion movement has acquired full power over the judiciary. A special police force, Life Enforcement, has been established to locate and arrest women who have become pregnant and are exhibiting intent to end their pregnancy. Once in custody, they are brought before a judge at the Life Court of New Dakota, to determine guilt and to impose confinement for a period of nine months, until birth. There are many such facilities, Sanctuary is better than most.
This is a surrealist-noir story of two life-long friends, Paula and Beth, who are swept up in the fast moving social and legal changes of the time. Paula is preparing to visit and stay with Beth, who has illegally acquired the medication to end her unwanted pregnancy. But it is Paula who finds herself at Life Court, before Judge White and her assistant Mr. Orange.

Craig Trumbo operates VuJa de Industries, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. He writes and produces music videos and short films addressing today's pressing social and political issues. Maya Jairam is a Fort Collins based actor and director, who points out that "Maya" means "Great Illusion" in Sanskrit - the illusion upon which reality is based. How fitting, then, that I am so passionate about story tellling - be it fact, fiction and anywhere in between. The more we plumb the depths of human stories, the more we realize Shakespeare was right - that we are such stuff as dreams are made of. Also, fun fact - her cello's name is Lando Cellorissian, he is played by Han Bow-lo who is, naturally, carbonite...erm, carbonfiber.
I'm pretty good at planning ahead, but not so much for keeping any sort of log or diary. So I wasn't sure exactly when this idea came around. But the document meta data show the first file date is October 9, '22, about six months after the Dobbs leak and a month before the decision. The date on the script document is April 3. At that time I was in post on my previous project, which wrapped in May. So a fair amount of percolation along the way, during which the concept evolved from being entirely an interrogation scene with a comedic edge to what is now a much fuller story, and one more pointed in tone.
My personal motivation for producing a film addressing the abortion "debate" is drawn from a mix of anger, disgust, and fear. While I don't have an immediate stake in this matter, I do fundamentally see the forced-birth movement as a human rights issue. This is a way for myself and the cast to make a statement through art.
