Director Biography - Aleksandra Gavrilenko

Hi! My name is Sasha (Aleksandra) Gavrilenko, and I recently graduated from the Kott Brothers' directors workshop.
I was born in Yakutsk, republic of Sakha. The majority of my family tree moved to live in Siberia during the beginning of the 20th century. I am proud of my family background.
My works aim to cultivate a humane approach. When your neighbours' hands are tied, what will your fellow man do? Will he throw a stone at innocent? I believe that the viewers won't. As art of cinema develops our moral virtues and empathy.
My heroes are young and rebellious. Coming from both: metropolis and provincial periphery. From the periphery, as distant that most of the audience would not be familiar with. However, it is important to portray those kids, to give them that voice. They are desperate to love and to live a 'beautiful life', unnecessarily the 'Dolce vita' style. Some of them are not able to do this because they are not emotionally free, some of them just burden in the correctional colonies literally for nothing . They want to alter their destinies, as I dreamed, when I was growing up in the coldest region in the world. I was lucky to choose the pathway of art , and I feel obliged to share this feeling of hope with the audience.
I have made several short films and music videos. Participant of the festivals "Tokyo Shorts", "Saint Anna", "LA Independed Women Awards", etc. Also I write and perform some poetry. Thank you!

Director Statement

The "Tea funeral" is my diploma film with which I've graduated from film school. This movie is an outlook of what I've acquired as a director during my education years. I wanted to shoot this story for a long time (approximately 6 years). When I was a little girl once I saw a group of guys who were teen-prisoner. They were not like anything you expect them to look like. Moreover, they were poor kids who wanted similar things that other kids had. Time has passed, but image of these prisoners fixed in my memory. Shooting on the actual swamps in mid-November was an enriching experience as it demanded all contribution and volition from me and my team. I am so proud of my actors and crew! As what we have done together is as true as our intention to portray an uneasy fate of young prisoners.
