Director Biography - Mohammad Miraliakbari

I am Mohammad Miraliakbari, born in Tehran in 1975. I graduated in theatre from Art and Architecture College and received my MA in Dramatic Literature. I have loved making films since my teens and made some experimental video films with my classmates when I was at university. I have done playwriting and theatre directing professionally since 1998. I have written almost 40 plays and directed about 10 plays. Because of my views and critical approach towards the society and my country’s politics, I have always faced bans and censorship during my career, in a way that I was banned from directing any play for seven years. I returned to my youth love, filmmaking, in 2019. Talk, My Man is the first short film that I made professionally.

Director Statement

As a dramatist, I had only one goal in creating the character and story and that was to discover the world around me; to discover a society, people, and their relationships. Now that I have returned to filmmaking, I can discover better the world around me with the angle of my camera. I was born and am living in the land of limitations; in a country, the women’s rights are very limited. In my society, minorities, especially sexual minorities, are not allowed to have opinions, ideas, or dialogues. I have not been one of the sexual minorities, but after meeting them, I decided to discover them and their world. I intend to make a short film tetralogy with LGBT themes. I will make a short film for each letter of the initialism, which represents a community. Talk, My Man is the first film of the series that deals with the transsexuals. It interested me that in a traditional society, a woman decided to change her gender and became a man, and how she would be treated by her children, family, and workplace. This is the beginning of the discovery of a world.
