Talk Black

LOGLINE: A timid engineer develops a wild and expressive split personality to help her speak up to the boy's club at work.

Mahogany is a talented black engineer working in the not so subtly racist south. She's been working at TLS for five years, but her boss continually gives the two new guys preferential treatment. As a coping mechanism Mahogany creates Liquida, a wild and expressive reflection of her self-consciousness. There are three versions of Liquida who, in their own way, try to get Mahogany to speak up for herself. When her boss embarrasses Mahogany in front of the new guys as well as a very important client, Liquida finally takes over Mahogany's body. And she holds nothing back.

Director Biography - Destiny Macon

Destiny graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2014 with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. She worked in this field for 3.5 years and quickly realized that the voice calling out from inside for her to pursue her passion, filmmaking, would never leave. After completing two intensive 9 month programs, UCLA’s professional screenwriting program and the Wide Angle program led by producer Effie Brown, she was able to win a grant through the SC Film Commission to produce a short film version of her feature - Talk Black.

In 2019 Destiny left her life as a civil engineer to become a full time freelance filmmaker under her company, Hush Girl Productions, LLC. As a mother of two children, a wife, and a filmmaker, Destiny is very accustomed to hard work. She wants to create films that premiere in theaters all over the world and she will work tirelessly until that dream is realized!

Director Statement

Talk Black was inspired by Destiny's frustratingly hilarious experiences working as a black, female engineer in South Carolina. After releasing that career path all together, she penned this tale about an intelligent, yet awkward woman whose "blackness" explodes out and manifests as her alter ego.
