Tales of Sunshine - "The Farmworker"
Through a meditative journey into the depths of Florida ecology, Tales of Sunshine observes the intimate and inspiring stories of four naturalists during the height of COVID-19. Explore this subtropical web of environmental justice with a conservation biologist, an ex-convict fisherman, a mermaid activist and a farm worker coalition leader.
In this episode, Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) member Nely Rodriguez guides us through the orange groves and trailer lots of Immokalee, a farmworker's town in South Florida. This agricultural community nourishes the U.S. population, but as Nely recounts, American consumers and corporations have historically overlooked the value and treatment of farmworkers in exchange for cheaper products. The CIW has organized to bring justice, respect and protection to farmworkers in Florida and beyond.
