TOSSED BUT NOT SUNK

This suggestive documentary film is the condensation of 10 years from Tsunami disaster in Tohoku, Japan.

Each victim lives out their life in their way with unresolved grief. Sachiko couldn’t find her husband in the end and took 6 years to accept reality. It was necessary for her to have kept writing countless letters to him. On the other hand, Kayoko and Daisuke couldn’t have a wedding, but they raise twins under the coronavirus crisis.

As a local broadcasting station, Television Iwate has continued to shoot the region and listen their voice. They are the most empathetic supporter of victims.

This film is not only a great educational material for disaster prevention but also great lessons to reminds us important things such as trying to understand for different ways of thinking and sympathizing others' situations.

Director Biography - Takashi Endo

Takashi Endo (1956 - )
Japanese film director whose films include 'Tossed but not Sunk' and 'Cradled at the Heart of the Mountains'.

Endo made his directorial debut with 'Cradled at the Heart of the Mountains' in 2019.
Endo joined TV Iwate in 1981 and started his career as a TV documentary director. In 1996, he won the Galaxy Award for 'Destroyed Sea'. Endo went on to direct 'Happiness in Poverty' (2001) and 'Cradled at the Heart of the Mountains' (2018).

Director Statement

This film shows viewers various phenomena occurred from Tsunami, because I would like viewers to think of preparations for Tsunami and know the reality that each victim who had a frightening time and dreadful experience has lived out their life for 10 years.

Some people say that the memory of the disaster fade away. However, people who suffered from the Tsunami remember it as vividly as if it was just yesterday. They live with unresolved grief. To try to understand others’ feelings and empathize with their situation is the theme of this film, “Tossed but not sunk”.
