Spring M.E.S. Zakariah is an emerging filmmaker based in Ghana, specializing in directing, writing, cinematography, and editing. Her journey into filmmaking officially began in 2022 after two years of honing her skills through filming and editing YouTube videos. Spring made her directorial debut in August 2023 with the short film TILL DEATH DO US PART.
Despite facing challenges such as budget constraints and property access, Spring persevered. As she continues to develop her unique style, she experiments through multiple short films available on social media. Her work aims to represent the voiceless and promote love and togetherness.
For her next project, Spring hopes to shed light on the stigma brave women in Ghanaian society face, while also celebrating authentic Ghanaian culture. To her, filmmaking is an art form that documents people's experiences, journeys, and scars. As she advances in her career, she aspires to inspire those who have never believed in their chances.
TILL DEATH DO US PART was initially conceived as one of many shorts to be shared on my Instagram page. However, the story quickly took on a life of its own, compelling me to create more than just a quick recording. I felt driven to make a “proper” film.
Creating the story was the easiest part of pre-production, but the real excitement came from developing storyboards, treatments, and shot lists. The narrative was intended to shed light on physical abuse while also exploring possible ways victims might retaliate. My fascination with human psychology, particularly the tendency for drastic reactions to even minor events, was a key inspiration.
Despite working with a tight budget and a crew and cast composed of friends, we made it happen. Production was my favorite part, even though we faced challenges, like issues with property access. It was an incredible experience—young people coming together for the sake of art. It was beautiful, and we wrapped up the shoot in no time.
Post-production highlighted the importance of capturing everything during production. Although we missed several shots, I managed to tell a coherent story in the end.
As my first film, I am deeply grateful for the sacrifices my friends made to help achieve my vision. It was nerve-wracking to present my work to the public, but their positive reception was overwhelming and humbling. While there is always room for improvement, I am incredibly thankful for this humbling experience and excited for future projects.
