"THE INTERPRETER"
"THE INTERPRETER"
Qaradeniz Productions, 2021
The film presents an overwiev of biography of Ismail Gasprinski (1851-1914) - the most prominent Crimean Tatar enlightener and educator, founder of the first Crimean Tatar printed media ("The Terciman" newspaper, est. 1883) and establisher of modernized schools for the Crimean Tatar youth. Gasprinsky's memory is still reverred by the Crimean Tatars. The film analyses Gasprinsky's strategy of making trade-offs with the colonial power of the Russian Empire in order to advance the cause of national education. The film is highly relevant to the current situation of the Crimean Tatar people living under Russian occupation. The main message of "The Interpreter" is the question of moral permeability of collaboration with the occupying power. The film gives no ready answers, allowing viewers to make their own choice.
