THE GAZE

By intertwining worlds through a transcultural vision and body rooted in West-Africa and in the Occident, ‘the ... gaze’ questions assumptions, questions reality and challenges to go beyond one's own frameworks. This film exposes the limitations of the gaze and the difficulties that arise from this. Does the gaze allows to come close, and see what is invisible on the outside?

Director Biography - Ise An Verstegen

The Gaze is a co-production of Ise An Verstegen and Serge Arthur Dodo

Ise An Verstegen
Ise's choreographic work is rooted in West-Africa and in the Occident.
She intertwines worlds with a transcultural vision and body language in works such as:

Secret (2012)
Moy Lo Lou (2013)
Nuy Demm (2014)
Dadje Ci Kumpa (2015)

Her works has been performed in nationally and internationally.
Ise is a performer, teacher and choreographer, and one of the few artists worldwide qualified to work with the African-modern Technique Germaine Acogny. She is stating a diploma of Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Amsterdam Dance Academy / AHK) and graduated from École des Sables, Technique Germaine Acogny.
Ise worked with, amongst other, Germaine Acogny (Jant-Bi), Patrick Acogny (Jant-Bi), Nita Liem (Do not Hit Mama).
Since 2011 Ise is connected as a dancer and teacher of the technique Germaine Acogny at the l’Ecole des Sables and the Academy of Amsterdam Dance / AHK, and she works internationally and nationally as 'Acogny dance-practitioner'.
Ise got rewarded with the 3Package Deal 2018-2019, a program of the AFK and Bureau Broedplaatsen (BBp) to stimulate and facilitate top talent and their work in Amsterdam.

This work has been directed by Focus Record - Serge Arthur Dodo.
Focus Record is a label based in Abijan, Ivory Coast, specialized in music and dance. Serge Arthur Dodo is both filmmaker and choreographer. With the company King'Art where he is the artistic director and the choreographer, he has created pieces such as:

He has also created a work in 2018 with students of MTD1 from AHK University Amsterdam which is entitled: “ A little manual for being”.
