The Faces of My Transformation Journey follows the emotional and physical evolution of Njoki, a young girl from the small town of Ishiara, as she navigates the challenges of self-discovery, social media, and personal growth. The documentary begins with Njoki’s humble beginnings, waking up each day with aspirations to grow and learn. However, as the story unfolds, her immersion in the digital world—especially social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook—leads her into distractions and an identity crisis.
The documentary captures Njoki’s growing attachment to the attention she receives online, portraying her desire for validation through likes, comments, and followers. This leads to her developing a relationship with a stranger who begins to manipulate her with gifts and deceit. The tension heightens as Njoki, struggling with loneliness and her desire for freedom, makes the dangerous decision to abandon school and meet the stranger in person, resulting in her disappearance and the worry of her family.
As the search for Njoki intensifies, the police locate her and the man, and she is found after two weeks of silence. The aftermath is painful and filled with regret, but Njoki’s journey is far from over. With the support of her family and a counselor, and a friend called Kagendo, she begins to rebuild her sense of self, embracing the process of redemption and change. The film closes on a hopeful note, showing Njoki’s renewed commitment to her studies and newfound self-awareness as she continues on her transformative path toward a brighter future.
The documentary is a powerful reflection on the influence of social media, the complexities of adolescence, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of challenges. It emphasizes the importance of self-discovery, the impact of choices, and the possibility of redemption, offering a poignant and inspiring narrative of personal growth.

Director Biography - ANDREW GITOBU KIRERU

Andrew Gitobu is a talented high school film director, teacher, and creative artist based in Ishiara, Kenya. With a passion for storytelling, Andrew has made a significant impact through his awareness films in Meru, addressing social issues and sparking conversations in his community.

Beyond film, Andrew is a gifted performer, having acted and danced during his campus years, showcasing his multifaceted talents. His time at Egerton University also saw him serve as the editor for the university’s magazine, where he honed his skills in communication and leadership.

As a filmmaker, Andrew has contributed to various documentary projects that have gained recognition at the Kenya Drama and Film Competitions, where his work has been showcased on the national stage. His documentaries focus on real-world issues and have resonated with audiences far beyond the classroom.

In addition to his creative pursuits, Andrew is a dedicated Maths and Physics teacher, inspiring students not only to appreciate the sciences but also to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving.

His combination of artistic vision, academic dedication, and leadership makes Andrew Gitobu a prominent figure in both the educational and creative spheres of Ishiara and beyond.

Through her journey, I wanted to delve into the powerful effects that digital spaces have on identity, self-worth, and relationships. Njoki’s story is one of vulnerability, seeking validation, and ultimately, finding the courage to rebuild and reclaim her sense of self.
The documentary sheds light on the dangerous allure of online attention and the isolation that often accompanies it, while also celebrating the strength and resilience required to overcome adversity. Njoki’s path to redemption is not just about recovery but a renewed commitment to understanding herself and the world around her. This film is a reminder of the importance of self-awareness, the impact of our choices, and the possibility of transformation, no matter how challenging the journey may be.
