THE BALLAD OF PIARGY

A story of a young woman, Juliši, who marries the son of the richest landowner in the village, but does not resist her father-in-law’s violent seduction and inadvertently finds herself in the middle of a rough love triangle. The ballad of Piargy is a symbol of modern Sodom and Gomorrah, a mirror of the distorted morals of the society. At the same time, it is a naturalistic metaphor for the subordinate position of women in the patriarchal society.

Director Statement

One psychology study says that the landscape horizon that surrounds you in your early childhood gets “imprinted” on your mind for the rest of your life. Every time you find yourself in a place with a similar horizon line, it evokes in you a pleasant but at the same time melancholic feeling of something long lost and found again.
I was born in a town surrounded by mountains. My father came from an isolated and inaccessible high-altitude village. Time has stopped there completely; the last important event there was World War II. As a child, I used to visit this magical place often, and the image of people still living the troubles of a bygone era has imbedded itself deep into my memory.
The story is based on active characters and a strong dramatic premise. The narration focuses on female characters, and the protagonist is a girl, which is rare. The structure is a classic three-act drama with a love triangle, framed by a prologue and en epilogue that define the mystery of the birth of the antichrist and god’s punishment – the avalanche that buries the village and its inhabitants. The historical background is a foreshadowing of World War II, in which one can find a parallel even with present day.
