Svalbard in Plastic
Documentary with polar explorer Børge Ousland
For the first time huge amounts of plastic and marine litter are spotted in the ocean of Svalbard. As much as never seen before. The refugium for arctic animals including polar bears, reindeers, seals, walrus, whales or seabirds is seriously endangered. Not only by consequences of the global climate change but also by plastic from our modern world. How could that happen? The documentary is a “Wake up Call” for the protected Arctic Life of Svalbard.
The Norwegian polar explorer Børge Ousland takes us on his journey to documenting all about the plastic litter in Svalbard. He is a leading polar explorer of our time due to his expeditions to the North and South Pole. He was currently on a spectacular North Pole expedition in December 2019 / January 2020. Børge Ousland is a member of the National Geographic Society and is very committed to raising awareness of the effects of global climate change in the Arctic. In this documentary he focuses for the first time on the plastic problem in Svalbard. He takes us on a journey and explores with leading polar scientists, the people living in Svalbard, volunteers and activists which effects marine litter as microplastics has on the protected Artic life.
