But the Sugar Company rigs the scale to cheat the farmers, and the police come to arrest people. Fortunately with someone’s help, the Qins survive the incident. Qin De-can decides to keep his feet on the ground and seek for an ordinary and simple life. However, when everything seems all right, something evil is imminent...
The poster was inspired by one of the famous novels, “The Steelyard”, by Lai He, the father of Taiwanese New Literature. During the Japanese Occupied Period, the government squeezed money from our farmers with sugarcane mostly. Thus, sugarcane is used here in the place of a steelyard, with a wood chopper at one end and a fountain pen at the other. The wood chopper represents the farmers while the fountain pen represents the intellectuals. With these, we’re telling a story about the conflicts of consciousness and the differences in values of the farmers and intellectuals in Taiwan in order to survive when they were stuck in the colonial system.
