Surrealist Ball 2019

The initial idea of Surrealist Ball 2019 came from the Surrealist Ball held by Marie-Hélène de Rothschild in 1972, in which celebrities attended dressed as various Surrealist imagery. This piece is inspired by David Lynch’s short film Rabbits (2002) and TV series Twin Peaks (1990-1991), the film is comprised of three scenes, each playing with dialogue and the nature of conversation in different ways. Surrealist Ball 2019 uses three actors (including the artist herself) playing seven characters, each given different names, personality, and costumes. The aim is to create the illusion of having a dinner party with a full house of guest using only three actors. This is achieved through the use of costumes and makeup, film set, and background sound effects. Classical music is played throughout the film, the changing of speed and volume enhances the emotion of the film and pushes the absurdity of the piece. Through the bizarre dialogue and the awkwardness of the characters, this film intends to instill discomfort and confusion on audiences, yet with elements of humour within. At paramount Surrealist Ball 2019 is a Lynchion and surrealist take on everyday awkward encounters with the ball setting acting as more of a backdrop for this concept.
