Lucas, who graduated in 2020 from Emerson College in the United States, began his journey as a writer for the university news show, "Good Morning Emerson." During this time, he directed three short student films: "The Delivery," "Inertia," and "Cold Nights."
In 2020, he returned to Brazil amidst the pandemic and joined ATMO Digital. In the company, he is responsible for directing live streams and live broadcasts. In the same year, Lucas began developing the screenplay for the short film "Banho de Sol" (Sunbath). This project not only marks his return to fiction directing after graduation, but also represents an ambitious step in his career.
Sunbath" is, above all, a film about freedom and how two such distinct characters - from different social classes, genders, races, and worldviews - perceive the curtailment of their freedoms.
The inspiration for this short came from a significant personal event: when the son of my grandfather's caregiver was arrested for drug trafficking. This led her professional responsibilities – caring for my 90-year-old widower grandfather – to clash with her need to handle bureaucratic matters. At the same time, my grandfather would daily express his frustrations with feeling overly protected, along with the typical suspicions of the Brazilian middle class regarding the morality of household maids.
Filmed in my grandfather's house, "Sunbath" is an authentic portrayal of these conflicts, where each scene reflects the struggle for freedom and the pursuit of autonomy amidst adverse circumstances. The film's visual style was chosen to enhance the realism of the narrative, using longer, static shots or smooth movements, action-driven editing, and natural lighting.
This short is a sincere expression of my vision as a filmmaker, where I seek to explore human and social complexities in an authentic and impactful way. Through "Sunbath," I hope to provoke reflections on power dynamics, social injustices, and individual struggles for freedom in our contemporary world.
