Director Statement

What inspired me to make this film is a story collection called “Convalescence Dreams” that I re-read three years ago. It was written by the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, it consists of 230 dreams, and each “dream” is a few lines narrative. What caught my attention the most is “Dream 16”. I always felt attracted to it, and it was always an inspiration to make my film, with my signature.
It was as if Naguib Mahfouz gave me a body and a beating heart, and I completed it with a head, legs, hands and a soul.
The main idea behind this film is how your past will find a way and will keep on following you if you don’t accept it as is. Do we finally face it? Or do we keep on running away from it?
In this story collection by Naguib Mahfouz, there is a state of doubt in all the dreams. Is what’s happening real or just a fantasy? It’s like being in the middle, between the sky and the ground at the same time.
