Stories are medicine and it is enough to listen to them, because when we listen to a story, its lesson is imprinted deep within us. Namely, they contain medicines to repair or recall any lost psychic drive and awaken the functioning of the natural instinctual psyche. Thus, female vitality can be regained through extensive "psychological-archaeological" excavations in the ruins of the female underworld.
"Behind ancient rituals there has always been a sacred spirit, and we tell stories when prompted by their agreement with us."
- Estes, C. Pinkola (2003). Women Who Run with the Wolves
When we talk about the story as medicine, we are talking about the softening of the scar tissue left behind by the consequences of trauma. We are talking about archetypes for healing old wounds, about the process of creating a new spiritual visualization that taps into the restoration of the old skills of the Life / Death / Life cycle - as Clarissa Pinkola Estes likes to call it - through which the soul becomes really visible, tangible and truly alive.
